A personal umbrella policy is a type of insurance that provides excess liability coverage that can be written over and above your underlying automobile and homeowners policy. So, if your liability coverage isn’t enough to cover the damages of an accident you cause or an incident on your property, a personal umbrella insurance policy kicks in right where your other liability underlying limits have been reached.

Generally, the insured’s standard underlying policies must contain minimum levels of liability coverage that are specified by the insurance company in order to add an umbrella policy, and therefore, greater and often times broader liability coverage. Some umbrella policies will write over watercraft policies as well.
